Air fresheners have become a staple in many American homes and offices, marketed with the promise of creating a clean, healthy, and sweet-smelling indoor atmosphere. But many of these products contain phthalates (pronounced thal-ates)—hazardous chemicals known to cause hormonal abnormalities, birth defects, and reproductive problems. NRDC’s independent testing of 14 common air fresheners, none of which listed phthalates as an ingredient, uncovered these chemicals in 86 percent

(12 of 14) of the products tested, including those advertised as “all- natural” or “unscented.”

Our work raises concerns that should be followed up immediately by thorough government testing of these products. Meanwhile, consumers should be aware that the pretty label and sweet scent may mask something much less pleasant.

Great Testimonial from GREEN GROUP !!! You can DO IT !!!!!

I will share a Testimonial or even few from Green Group Members in LinkedIn !! I am Happy to see how many are so AWARE and How Many People are taking actions to keep A Clean , Non Toxic Environment with so easy and No Cost Solutions !!!! Soooo …. TRUE and so Easy to Adopt !!! Yes North Americans , so much in Convenience and Consumming !!! Yes to Educate New Generations in REDUCING , REUSING and MINIMALISING and SAYING NO TO BIG BRANDS !!!!!!

1. vinegar and baking soda for:
a. limescale
b. water rings
c. tubs, toilets and sinks and faucets

2. Lemon:
a. getting rid of bacteria
b. disinfecting
c. mould (like let’s say, you had mould on your tent because you packed it away one summer and it got stinky). I would put lemon on the mould it and sunbleach it, just lay it out on the grass or place it on a clothes line outside on a sunny day BAM!

3. essential oils:
a. be careful not to confuse these with mineral oils OR with synthetics – buying them made of soy is renewable and safe
b. I put a few drops of these in a spray bottle with a bit of vinegar (tbl spoon) and dilute it with water. Then I go to town! Where the dog sits, where the boys came over to watch the big game on the sofa and now the house smells like nachos! I just spray that homemade concoction every where

In my opinion, what needs to happen is LESS subsidies to eco companies trying to make eco products (which I do support. Don’t mistake me, I use these true biodegradable and safe eco-products that I buy locally). Rather invest funds in strategies and tactics and programs that encourage the NEW generations to buy into:
REDUCING, REUSING and MINIMALIZING and saying NO to big brands and box stores and ELIMINATING the concept of CONVENIENCE. As North Americans, we are very motivated by convenience.

CONVENIENCE is ruining the Earth. But, with the proper grants and funds into children’s camps, high schools, etc to rid them of the concept of “but this is so much easier…” then I think we’ve got something.

That’s just my thought.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) states that the FDA has failed to generate any sunscreen safety standards. Many makeup products, particularly foundation and lip balms, contain chemical sunscreens. According to the EWG, however, the evidence that chemical sunscreen protects you from skin cancer is minimal, at best, and some evidence even shows that chemical sunscreen may increase the risk of developing melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer. Likewise, sunscreen blocks vitamin D absorption, and many chemical sunscreens contain potential hormone disruptors that can be absorbed through the skin.

Fragrance

harmful fragranceIt’s understandable that you want your cosmetics to smell nice. Unfortunately, many fragrances are chemically generated and can contain multiple chemical compounds. According to The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, fragrance is considered a “trade secret,” so there’s no way of knowing just what those chemicals are. Instead, you’ll typically find these trade secret scents listed in the ingredients merely as “fragrance.”

Possible problems with the chemicals used to create fragrance include allergic reactions, hormone disruption from phthalates and synthetic musks, and even neurotoxic effects from certain chemicals.

According to Health Canada, it is virtually impossible to remove heavy metals from cosmetics. The Canadian government limits heavy metals to a certain percentage; however, no such laws exist in the United States. Metals you may find in cosmetics include:heavy metals in makeup

Alcohol denatured – Also disclosed in the ingredients of Febreze, it’s linked to cancer, developmental/reproductive toxicity, organ system toxicity and skin, eyes and lung irritator
Butylphenyl methylpropion al – allergen, immunotoxin and and skin, eyes and lung irritator
Ethyl acetate – linked to developmental/reproductive toxicity, neurotoxicity, organic system toxicity and and skin, eyes and lung irritator

Removing Odors Naturally

Again, it’s important to understand that these types of products are not only dangerous to our health, but they aren’t actually cleaning the air or eliminating odor. They are just masking it…the bacteria and molecules are still hanging around, maybe even making you sick themselves.
